Here we go, my first ever blog. I’ve never written one of these before, mostly because I’m a radio announcer and not a journalist, but it’s a spiffy new feature on our website and I’d hate to leave it empty.
While I will try to write something mildly entertaining or informative each time I blog, my biggest effort will be to get the spelling right. Have you ever read an article somewhere, and it has spelling mistakes? Drives you crazy doesn’t it? You probably thought to yourself “these guys are professionals and they can’t do their job correctly” Yet at the same time, most people think that proper spelling isn’t a big deal. It is, because poor spelling makes you look stupid, and I don’t want you to look stupid, nor do I want it to hold you back. I grew up before the age of spell check, and I remember losing marks on an otherwise good essay in school because of spelling and punctuation mistakes.
Here’s what I mean… “I seen you called but I was prolly driving. Midas well just come over cuz there all hear.” I see posts like this on social media all the time. I’m not trying to be preachy about it, or a Grammar Nazi, I just think because of texting we’ve become lazy. We should at least try, even if spelling isn’t your strong suit, because there are times where poor spelling can bite you in the ass: like your resume. Even your social media is important, because prospective employers these days do check your social media presence for content, and if all they see is poor spelling, it could mean they give the job to someone else. It does happen, I’ve seen it.
