RCMP have confirmed the presence of carfentanil in the Saskatchewan Penitentiary.
On the morning of July 15, a 22-year-old inmate was found unresponsive. Naloxone was administered and the inmate was transported to hospital where he eventually recovered.
Saskatchewan RCMP said this is the first time carfentanil has been confirmed in their jurisdiction.
Carfentanil is an opioid drug. An amount weighing less than a grain of salt can kill a human. It is 100 times stronger than fentanyl, which is 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine.
